Jamie Empert

About

Music was part of my life from an early age, when I played concert flute and piano. As school ended and my career took shape, music gradually moved to the background. Roughly fifteen years ago, a renewed wish to make music—combined with a deep appreciation for the Native American flute—led me to purchase my first flute, then another, and another. In 2018 I took part in a Native American flute player's competition at the Native Rhythms Festival and won, which came with the chance to perform at a later festival. I already had many songs composed and started to approach recording more seriously. That is where my husband Joe comes in. His story is much the same: he played trumpet growing up, and music eventually gave way to life and career. It turned out a percussionist was waiting inside him, and he found his real musical calling years ago when he took his first djembe lesson. From there things grew, and today our home is filled with flutes and a wide range of percussion instruments. Joe also enjoys the recording side of music—sound mixing and live performance. In 2019 we released our album Take Flight – Around the World on the Native American Flute. The song Peggy's Cove earned an award nomination for Best Song, Solo Flute from the Native American Style Flute Awards in 2020. We are steadily working on new music and bringing new and interesting instruments into the mix. Playing music together is an absolute joy!
